Its Black Tie night on the DC Metro

I've never seen so many minks for Obama as I've seen today and ok,
even as a vegetarian, there might've been a few hours when I damn well
wanted a dead beaver pelt or two to fend off the hypothermia. (I've
got a picture of one woman in a wheelchair who had been bundled in a
full length down sleeping bag, I thought she looked odd in the
morning, but I looked jealous by the afternoon).

And now, it's tomorrow already but Obama Day in DC lives on with
everybody in their gowns and tuxes on the Metro as we all leave our
balls to crawl happily and wearily home.

Oh yes, just what we all needed.

Melissa Ethridge is rocking the finale and what a party its been, just
the flavor to spin it right back into Obamamania. Everyone is so
excited, its great to hear the stories of old friends who thought they
were watching on TV yesterday and then suddenly found out they were
going to be 40 feet from obama at the swearing in. But more later, now
the party is still going on..

Its a party!

We are jam packed into the Mayflower Hotel with 2498 other queers,
Cyndi Lauper and Ian Mckellan just came on and now the Bishop, our
Bishop, is urging is to party tonite and push to pass our civil rights
legislation tomorrow.

Ever want to curl up in a metro station?

I tell ya I feel like that's just what I wanted to do when we felt
that first blast of heated air since 7 am as we got on the metro at 5
pm or so, it was soooo delicious. And then more heat, and if you hold
out even longer, your first bathroom in 12 hours!

I feel a we're but bad for all those 1800 or so parade participants
tho because after obama passed first, so many hours past schedule,
most of the people in the bleachers could hardly wait for Biden to
walk by before they were out of there. But hey, each of them got their
CNN glory, even if the street was rapidly emptying. Saw an old friend
in the bleachers, she said she had been waiting in the frozen
bleachers since 8:30 that morning. Wow. Oy. But we are back and warm
now, heating up so we can change for the big queer gala, which sigh,
starts in only an hour. Shower and food please....

Bleacher games

We had been playing spot the sniper, which made us wonder why they
were all one only 1 side of the street, but now one person with a
radio says Ted Kennedy got sick at lunch so its delayed, which anyone
else prob learned from CNN long ago. And now someone else called their
brother who is watching CNN so news is the flashing lights at the end
of the street are Obama coming in his car!!!?

Not in trenchcoats

Ok, so I may have no idea if I still have all my fingers or toes, but
at least we aren't forced to stand motionless at parade rest in a
trench coat like the army honor guard troops lining the parade route.
We are up here in our perfect bleacher spot talking with our new buddy
Sam, the photog from Black Enterprise.

Woah we are in!

Two plus hours of waiting as the temp dropped and Katie Paige
struggled with the secret service to convince them to open the gate to
bleacher ticket holders, and inaugural committee event manager Katie
won the day, we are in to the mostly empty bleacher seats with a
perfect view of the length of Pennsylvania Ave. We are 60 feet over
from the official press reviewing stand and I can't imagine a better
view. Thank you Katie!!

Tickets schmickets

Ok, bail on the swearing in and get to parade entrance for reserved ticketholders by 11:25 for 2:30 parade and they say gate closed to all, no police seem to even understand what the reserved bleacher seats are, or to understand that every reserved ticketholder was told that general closing didn't mean closing for the 5000 reserved folks. They say we should complain to whomever sold us the tix, when we say it was The Inaugural Committee, they shrug. Finally, an angel, Catherine Paige, who seems to work for the inaugural committee, tries to face off with secret service to get reserved folk in, we put all hopes in her as we hear the crowds on the mall cheer for our new president.

If we close our eyes and listen to his muffled voice on the far away loudspeakers, we imagine he's saying great things.

10:30 head to parade

We give up on the swearing in tix, folk have been in line since 7:30 am and didn't get in. Now trying to cross Penn to get to parade.

Should we stay or go?

We hear 3 of 4 silver ticket gates were never open, we are finally at the open one, but folk from up front say they've been there for 2 hours and they are not letting folk in. Should we turn, ditch the speech and try for our parade seats instead? I can't help but think it is a little off that having tix and being here at 7:30 am didn't mean we were able to get near to our "reserved" spots, not from crowds, but from police blocks.

2 hours and maybe 1/2 mile?

We are fighting our way thru bushes with other silver ticket holders, steps from the Capitol but in yet another crowd mob scene. Meanwhile the folks without tix have gotten good jumbotron seats. They say mall is full to 14th street already and they warn us they are about to close our whole ticket section for good, so having the tix will be worthless. Boyo boyo, Times Square on new years eve was so much more organized.

But, we are here, some choir is singing and everyone is crazy with excitement.

DC police are wack

We made good time on the metro to Union Station but then we followed
the police marked ped pathway and it promptly penned us in to a street
they have blocked off, won't even let us leave. Not near the mall. Why
have they directed folk to a dead end mob area? Bus blocking our path
to any other streets.

Landed in DC

The crowds are already intense, everything takes much longer than planned, or maybe that was just because I accidentally went the exact opposite way on the Metro? But then, when would I want to wander aimlessly around DC if not now? But.... we're here!! It's so exciting! Now, to get settled and then off to find one of those pink knit spangled Obama hats, because you know we need that.
